The site inspired by Château Rouzaud and the exceptional 360° view of the countryside and surrounding mountains explain the foundation of a chapel as early as the 12th century. At that time, Count Roger II of Foix had just returned from Apamée in Syria, the place of his high feats of arms during the first crusade, which gave its name to Pamiers, the town closest to Château Rouzaud.
It is not impossible that Jacques Fournier, born in Saverdun, and who will become Pope Benoit XII, was gathered in this beautiful chapel, at the time when, as bishop, he headed the tribunal of the Inquisition in charge of pursuing the Albigensian heretics who were hiding in the forests of the region.
In 1521, an epidemic of plague broke out Pamiers and two thirds of the inhabitants fled the town. This may explain the creation at that time of a first farm, which was later extended in the 19th century by a castle that served as a hunting lodge.
The property with its lake and farm facilities were dormant until Sir Richard and Lady Brooke bought it in 1998 and decided to turn it into a little gem of English charm and design. The lake is dredged and restored, a terrace joins the castle to the renovated farm buildings. Lady Lucy Brooke calls on the talents of decorator Fiona Goodhart to create simple, warm and welcoming (seemingly) interior spaces, whose walls house the family’s exceptional collection of portraits dating back to the 15th century. Passionate about art, Lord Edward Brooke will use the beautifully appointed outdoor spaces as a showcase for his collection of bronze statues by David Williams. Remarkable work has been carried out in the undergrowth, lawns and gardens, which has resulted in giving the present site its coherence and exceptional living environment.
Park of 6 hectares with secure swimming pool, tennis, zip line, pond, forest of holm oaks.
The three buildings of the estate have a total of 9 double rooms: 4 in the castle with its round towers, 3 in the adjoining main building, one in the pigsty and one in the sheepfold.
The castle is made up of the former hunting lodge with its round towers which communicates to the west with a 16th century main building, called the farm, to form a single building.
