The Morvan is a central region in the history of France: the château de Rivière is only 2 leagues on horseback (9 kilometers) from Mount Beuvray, seat of the Gallic fortress-city of Bibracte, capital of the great people of the Eduens. Bibracte, where in the year 52 BC, Vercingetorix was elected General-in-Chief of the Gallic tribes a few months before being defeated at Alesia. Bibracte where Caesar came to retire during the winter following his victory at Alesia to write his De Bellum Gallicum (with no doubt in his luggage, a chained Vercingetorix, “vae victis!”). At the top of Mont Beuvray, in the middle of a park classified as a Natural Zone of Ecological Interest, is the remarkable museum of Celtic civilization, a place designed for scholars and history lovers as well as for small children. The present Château de Rivière was built in the 18th century on the site of an old 15th century fortified house. The left wing of the rear facade was redesigned in the 19th century. The castle was the seat of a barony, built on the top of a rocky hill, and defended by a double wall enclosure. Its layout is shown on the cadastral map of 1844. Its first mention goes back to 1171 then 1253. The ensemble was rebuilt in classical style by the Marquis de Villars in 1715. The stronghold belonged to the Lanty family in the 15th century and to the Bergers from the 16th century. At the end of the 18th century, the Château de Rivière was the property of Denis-Zacharie (known as Eugène) Bertrand de Rivière (1776 -1851) who married Anne Marie de Drouin de Bouville (1797-1863) in 1814. They had six children, including Josephine (1815-1891) who married Augustin-Gustave de Geffrier de Pully (1808-1875) in 1834. The Château de Rivière belongs today to the Geffrier family, which was ennobled on May 18, 1821. The family coat of arms shows a golden triangle charged with a rose proper.
The Château de Rivière is located at about 3h30 from Paris by car and less than 2 hours from Paris by TGV via Le Creusot (1h15) and car (45mn) and 2 hours from Lyon by car. This makes it a strategic place to gather guests coming from the South or the North of France. By car (from Paris) 280 km : take the A6 towards Lyon then exit at Nemours to take the A77 (Autoroute des Arbres) to Nevers (about 2h of freeway) – Exit 34 towards Autun/Decize, then follow the N81 to Luzy, towards Château-chinon to arrive 10 Km further to Larochemillay. You can see on your left the Château de Rivière overlooking the valley. From Lyon by car : take the A6 towards Paris, then exit at Chalon Nord and follow the Route Express (4 lanes) to Le Creusot Montchanin, direction Autun and follow the route Marmagne / Etang sur Arroux and Luzy. By train : go to the TGV station of Le Creusot Montchanin (1h15 from Paris) then 45 minutes drive to Larochemillay. Or take a train to Luzy, a big town located 10 km from Larochemillay.
